Has your jawline become weaker and less defined with age or weight fluctuations? Are you yearning for the strong, sculpted jawline you enjoyed when you were younger and slimmer? Submental liposuction with the team at Foglietti Fostyk Plastic Surgery can help. Submental liposuction is the process of removing stubborn subcutaneous fat in the chin and jaw area. The surgery can have an enormously positive effect on the appearance of your entire face.
What Submental Liposuction Accomplishes
Submental liposuction is a safe and effective way to accomplish the following:
- Refine and define the jawline
- Eliminate unwanted fat deposits beneath the chin that contribute to a double chin
- Give the entire face a leaner and healthier appearance
Once fat cells are removed from the body, they cannot grow back. This makes submental liposuction a lasting solution to stubborn chin and neck fat.
Submental liposuction is a fairly straightforward outpatient procedure. Anesthesia is first administered. The surgeon creates several tiny openings in the skin under the chin and along the jawline. A hollow tube called a cannula is then inserted through the openings. Moving the cannula back and forth, the surgeon suctions unwanted fat to achieve the desired contour and definition. Removing pockets of fat from the chin and jawline brings into focus the angles of the jaw. When the surgeon is finished with the contouring, the skin openings are closed with small sutures.
Depending on your personal preferences, you may choose to combine submental liposuction with another facial procedure, such as a facelift or eyelid surgery, for a greater transformation. Our board-certified plastic surgeons will work with you to design a customized treatment plan that reflects your unique goals.
Minor bruising, swelling and soreness is normal after submental liposuction. Patients are outfitted with compression garments around the chin/neck to support the healing tissues and are advised to keep their head elevated for a few days to minimize swelling.
Initial results can be seen soon after surgery and continue to improve for a few months as the tissues and skin settle.
Who Is a Good Candidate for Submental Liposuction?
To qualify for submental liposuction, you should be in good physical health and not smoke (or commit to quitting prior to surgery). Ideally, you should have excess fat pockets but relatively good skin tone, as some skin elasticity is necessary to help the skin retract over the area once the fat has been removed.
If you are concerned about excess skin and fat along your jaw, chin and neckline, alternative procedures like neck lift are available. Our board-certified plastic surgeons can determine whether submental liposuction or another surgical option is your best choice after an in-person evaluation.
