Botox for Skin Health?
Botox smooths dynamic lines and wrinkles between the brow, across the forehead, and around the eyes. This neuromodulator uses a neurotoxin called botulinum toxin type A to temporarily freeze muscles that crease the skin and form wrinkles over time. Botox offers results for three to four months before maintenance treatments are necessary, but research also indicates Botox can increase skin elasticity and pliability.
Researchers studied the skin quality of 40 women with Botox injections in their glabella (smooth area between the eyebrows), lateral orbit (outer sides of the eyes), and forehead. They used a device to test and measure their skin elasticity, and the 2014 study in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery found Botox helped maintain and increase skin elasticity by constricting the muscles. The elastic recoil of the glabellar region increased by 20%, and the lateral orbit areas increased by 18%. The skin tissues in the lateral orbit were 26% (8.3% in the glabellar region) more pliable than before Botox.
Hyaluronic Acid Fillers May Improve Skin Quality
Dermal fillers made with synthetic hyaluronic acid, such as Juvéderm, work like your natural (though depleting) stores of hyaluronic acid to restore lost volume. Hyaluronic acid binds to moisture, rehydrating the skin, and supports fibroblasts. Fibroblasts produce collagen proteins for connective tissues for supple, youthful skin. These fillers may improve skin quality by increasing collagen and elastin for a fuller, healthier-looking complexion.
Juvéderm is the best-selling dermal filler line worldwide, with six FDA-approved hyaluronic acid variations. These injectables use cross-linked hyaluronic acid molecules suspended in a gel.
